Ward 3 Northampton:    Fruit tree planting project

Northampton's ward 3 lies south of downtown, is divided by route 5, and is west of I-91. Like other parts of town, countless little "spaces" of green lawn, eroded footpaths, compacted soil and mugwort abound.

This project seeks to convert these "spaces", into "places" - where opportunities for free food, medicine, and connection to the land abound
.

Project Goals:
  • Transform vacant spaces around town into small, ideally perennial gardens
  • Work with local volunteers, especially youth, through the design and implementation process
  • Install informative signs to inspire curiosity and use of space, and grow enthusiasm for the project.
  • Inspire similar projects in other parts of the city, and beyond Northampton
Project strategy:
  • Identify and catalog vacant, grass spaces around town
  • Assess and design for each site
  • Source material for each space (fruit trees, lumber, compost, etc)
  • Identify maintenance team
  • Install the garden!

Some of the many "spaces" around town. Recognize any?
