Winter Happenings

3/4/2013

Picture
This month, we've been going to nearby Tripple Brook Farm, an amazing plant nursery in Southampton. Join us for our Thursday and Friday morning work parties, from 9-1. Get in touch by email if you'd like to tag along and learn about grafting, greenhouse maintenance, starting seeds, plant identification and more!

Picture
We've been starting seeds for fruit tree guilds, gardens, flowers and groundcovers around town, like black eyed susans, garden sage, cinnamon vine, wildflower mixes, valerian, mints, echinacea, chives, yarrow, lupines & more!
We meet regularly at Owl and Raven, are making a big plant order this week, got our non-profit bylaws hammered out, and, speaking of hammering, got a nifty metal punch to stamp letters into metal, permanent, snazzy tree tags!

Picture
Meanwhile, we finally finished all 145 thank you cards, including 30 water color paintings for the generous donors to the Kickstarter fundraiser. Thanks to all who helped paint! With the cards went 300 paw-paw seeds, ready to germinate with instructions. Imagine paw-paws in backyards all over the East coast! (A few even went to California)

Picture
This November, using some funding from the Ritual Arts Collective grant and school budgets, we were able to plant 18 fruit trees at and around public schools in the valley! We'll be continuing to plant at these schools in the spring.

With the kids' help, we planted...

Picture
  • 2 Kousa dogwoods, 2 Plums (Green Gage, Big Blue), and 2 Apple (Grime's Golden, Gala) trees at the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School in Hadley, where this spring we hope to put in a medicinal herb garden and more fruit trees!
  • 3 Kousa dogwood trees at the Green River Conservation & Rec. Area in Greenfield (pending talks with the Parks & Rec committe might allow many more plantings here - imagine flood-resistant pawpaw groves!)
  • 3 Kousa dogwood trees at UMass Amherst.
  • 2 pears (Seckle and Bartlett) and 4 apple (Grime's golden, Arkblack, Gala & McIntosh) trees at the Four Rivers Charter School in Greenfield, bringing the fruit tree tally at the campus to over 20!

Fundraiser Succesful!

Picture
We're so pleased to announce the sucessful end of our Kickstarter campaign! We raised 5,5209 through the crowd-sourcing website, which ended up to be roughly 4,800 after fees, etc. Cash donations brought this back up to 5,559$! This translates to over 200 fruit trees we'll be planting this spring in Northampton & communities beyond. We are so grateful for everyone's generosity, for the work the donors did to origionally earn the money, for the animals and plants they ate to have the energy to do that work, and for the energy used to sustain folks' computers for the duration of fundraiser.

Help Yourself won a 1000$ grant this spring from the generous Ritual Arts Collective, who feature the popular North Amherst "Drum and Dance" in North Amherst! This funding will go to our first project, the Rail Trail Connector. In October, dozens of grape vines, mainly Concords, will arrive, to go up the cedar posts that line the bike path! Some Asian pears and native plums will fill in the azalea area near the stone steps, where the path crosses pleasant street!
